Fire Safety to Home School Group

The Fire and Life Safety Bureau is regularly in all of the public schools in the District. The desire is to be sure that message of fire safety is delivered to all of the children in the district. The efforts of Captain Dave Walker and the rest of the bureau have been very successful for the past 2 decades as can be seen by the low number of house fires that the District has every year.

A somewhat new challenge has risen though, to accomplish this fact. According to Dr. Brian Ray (president of the nonprofit National Home Education Research Institute), homeschooling may be the fastest-growing form of education in the United States (at 7% to 12% per year). There are approximately 2 million homeschool students in the United States in grades K-12. ("Facts on Homeschooling - July 2006: http://www.nheri.org/content/view/199/")

Reaching homeschoolers with the message of Fire & Life Safety becomes difficult as the students are obviously spread out throughout the District and not all congregated at one central location. So, what the Bureau has begun to do is to find times when these children are gathered together.

During the past couple of years, Fire Safety Educator Peter Sidari has identified some of these groups and brought the Fire & Life Safety curriculum to them where they meet, and also has invited them in and given some tours of the Fire Station to the kids.

On March 1st, Peter Sidari and fellow Fire Safety Educator Kevin Magin went to one of these groups and taught Kindergarten and 1st Grade aged children the ABC's of Fire Safety, Friendly Firefighter and also were taught a song by Kevin entitled, "Two Ways Out" (see link on right to watch video!)
