The District:
The North Greece Fire District is a recognized fire district in the State of New York, County of Monroe, Town of Greece. The fire chief, who is responsible to the Board of Fire Commissioners, administers daily operations. The five commissioners are publicly elected residents of the fire district dedicated to providing the very best fire protection available. They manage an annual budget comprised of tax dollars levied on property owners in the district. This money is used for the purpose of purchasing apparatus and their upkeep, buildings and their maintenance, salaries, equipment, etc. The board also employs the services of an attorney, secretary and treasurer.
The Board of FIre Commissioners:
The Board of Fire Commissioners is sworn-in to promulgate the district policy, manage and distribute the budget and oversee the operations of the fire chief. A major function is to see that the district mission is carried out from an administration position. The fire chief is depended upon to provide appropriate emergency operations and logistical support. As fire ground incident commander, he/she is responsible for fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical services (EMS), and a degree of hazardous materials response with a staff of twenty-four career firefighters and four full time dispatchers, working under Monroe County Civil Service rules and New York State laws, supported by thirty part-time personnel and a sizable number of volunteer firefighters.
The Officers:
Three of the four chiefs are volunteer. They are elected by the membership of the fire department. The chief may only serve for three consecutive years. There are three volunteer captains and three volunteer lieutenants that are assigned to fire station assignments. District fire officers include: one career assistant chief, who acts as the chief’s administrative assistant and municipal training officer (MTO); two career captains who oversee apparatus, apparatus maintenance and fire prevention, and three career lieutenants who oversee training, EMS quality control and more. These career officers assist the career assistant chief as needed and supervise the district’s quick response squad and career firefighters.
